Sailing Schools and Courses
We offer ASA certified Basic Sailing and Coastal Cruising certification courses. All instruction is provided onboard new and full-equipped Catalina Yachts. Our instructors are fully ASA certified and Coast Guard licensed captains.
Basic Sailing is designed to teach the beginning sailor the skills necessary to begin a lifetime of sailing. We use textbooks and materials prepared by the American Sailing Association. Upon completion of this course a student will be certified to the ASA Basic Sailing Standard. Basic sailing requires no previous sailing experience.
Participants in Basic Sailing perform all tasks from preparing the boat for sailing, tacking and gybing, sailing on all points of sail, to participating in safety drills.
Our students learn on new and well equipped Catalinas. Our instructors are Coast Guard licensed captains and certified ASA instructors with over thirty years sailing, racing, and offshore cruising. We make a special effort to be supportive and understanding. Our goal is that you learn to sail and that you have a fun and rewarding experience.
Class begins at 9:00 am on Friday. All day Friday, Saturday, and Sunday are spent sailing off the Georgia coast. Class size is limited to 6. Deck shoes or non-marking shoes are required.
Coastal Cruising workshops offer instruction in the skills needed to cruise in offshore waters and enjoy a weekend cruise along the coast. This course is designed for sailors who want to further their skills to include sailing a larger boat, reading a chart, navigating offshore, and blue water cruising.
We also do Private Sailing lessons for a day, a week, or weekend - for groups or individuals (see below)
Participants sail on new Catalinas equipped with all electronics. Class sessions include instruction in handling the boat under power, docking, reading charts, choosing an anchorage, anchoring, piloting, using the latest marine electronics and much more. Upon completion of this course you will have the skills and confidence to cruise.
This course is also sanctioned by the ASA and completion of this course qualifies you for ASA Coastal Cruising certification.
Classes begin at 1:30 p.m. Friday. Students study navigation and begin sailing Friday, sail to an offshore destination on Saturday, and complete instruction on Sunday. Class size is limited to 6. Deck shoes or non-marking shoes are required.
Private sailing classes
We can arrange private school lessons for groups of up to 6, which can be arranged any time throughout the year. Private schools can be ASA certification courses, or we can tailor the curriculum to your needs. For tuition costs and details of private schools, please contact us.
Accolades From Sailing School Participants
Love Dunbar Yachts, we purchased our Catalina 445 from them a few years ago and love this group of people! Even took a few classes from their great instructor Barney! But most importantly, they treat us like family.... a few months ago we were docked in Fernandina, when we had a medical emergency and had to rent a car and get to the hospital. We called Dunbar Yachts and they rallied to our aid, retrieved the boat and took her home for us! It was such a relief to not have to worry about how to get her back to St. Simons and to know that she was in very capable hands! Thanks to Mike, Steve and company! - Donna
Thank you. You're a good and thoughtful skipper and teacher. We had a blast remembering how much we like to sail. - Robb
I wanted to thank you so much, Barney, for our class from a couple of weeks back. I found it inspiring and immensely confidence building…the class was an absolute pleasure! I hope to keep the enthusiasm cranking and see if I can get this beauty of mine in the water. - Mitch
